About Kathryn's Work

Watercolors allow the interplay of light and shadows to captivate the viewer’s attention. As in all elements of life, each item in a painting should reflect itself onto the items near it and in return, each receives light and shadow back onto itself. With this interplay, a sense of reality is born in the painting.

I believe an artist is a historian with creative license. He or she captures a moment in time and permanently records it for future generations in much the same way a photograph is meant to do. I seldom paint any person or scene which does not emotionally move me to paint it.

When I choose a subject to paint, I attempt to replicate the portion of the subject which is most important, though I may choose to make subtle or even significant changes in the less important portions of the piece. This allows me to create an esthetically pleasing image while capturing the essence of the intended subject.

I have been painting exclusively with watercolors for fifteen years, though my interest in painting began 25 years ago with oils and later with acrylics. Once I discovered watercolor, I knew I would enjoy it the most. The sense of immediacy required, coupled with the luminosity of the paper, commands my attention more than any other medium.

My primary interests lie in portraiture, although I paint all subject matters. My paintings and prints are part of private collections throughout the USA, Mexico, and Italy
